Tempe is situated to the south of Phoenix, and makes up a part of the Phoenix conurbation. It was established as an amalgamation of two original settlements, Hayden's Ferry and San Pablo, the two settlements having been formed as farming communities to take advantage of the irrigation canals in the area.
Today Tempe is situated on the crossroads between all the local communities, and has the densest population in the state. Freeways and bus routes intersect here, and a new light railway system is being developed to link downtown Tempe, Phoenix and Mesa and Arizona State University. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is situated 2 miles northwest of the city links the conurbation to other parts of America and to Europe.
