Scottsdale is the smallest of the three cities in the Phoenix conurbation, but it is definitely the place to live. It has grown sharply since its incorporation in 1951 - form a population of 2000 to more than 210,000 inhabitants in 2005. During that time it has developed into a city that is renowned for its high quality of life.

Scottsdale is one of the major retail areas in the South West. It has more than 15 shopping centers, and concentrates on high end and boutique shops as well as good department stores. Currently, Scottsdale is the home to a community college with more than 10,000 students and a private college that offers one- and two-year certifications. Scottsdale also has a culinary institute, a therapeutic massage college, a graduate school of management and a school of architecture that offers graduate degrees in art, music and design.
