Phoenix is the capital of the State of Arizona, and the most populous city in the State with a population of around 1.5 million. Not only is it one of the largest cities in the US in terms of population, it is geographically large as well, covering 475 square miles.

The area around Phoenix was inhabited by the Hohokam Indians from about AD 700. Because the area is very arid, the Hohokams developed a canal system to irrigate the land, and created arable land. These canals were redeveloped by the early European settlers and are now the basis for the modern Arizona Canal, the Central Arizona Project Canal and the Hayden-Rhodes Aquaduct.

Phoenix has some 300 days of sunshine a year. The city has hot and dry summers, but winters are pleasant with temperatures in the mid and high sixties in December, January and February.
